Delhi-based photographer Neha Choudhury has five dogs. In this post, she tell us how she met her two desis Puchki and Tiku, who came into her life as puppies. Ardent dog lover, Neha loathes it when people refer to these pets as “raaste ka kutta”, and emphasises the need to spread awareness about the Indogs. “They are intelligent, alert, adaptive, protective, and seldom fall ill,” says Neha.

Q. How did Puchki and Tiku come into your life?

I had gone to a friend’s place for dinner, and while we were waiting for more people to join us, there was a knock at the door. Someone opened the door thinking that more people had arrived but there was nobody. Then comes another knock and in walks a puppy, shivering in the December cold. That was my Puchki! She comes in and makes herself very comfortable next to me on the couch. How could I have left this cute innocent thing out in the cold? A year later, my sister and I were returning home when a tiny thing came and stood in front of our car. We could not leave this adorable baby on the street, so we got her home with us and named her Tiku.

Q. Tell us about Puchki’s and Tiku’s personality.
Puchki, I would say is the alpha girl. She loves to dominate and control all the other poor dogs in the house especially Tiku, our little girl of the family. But Puchki is also very friendly, be it with strangers or kids. She loves being around people and wants all the attention for herself.
Tiku is well-behaved when she is home, as Puchki would not let her make any nuisance. But as soon as she steps out for her walks, she is completely different. She gets protective about her space and will chase away all the dogs on the street. She is naughty but friendly with people!

Q. What’s the best part of having a desi?
I love my desis. They are so obedient and have been the easiest to train. They are smart, always alert, and hardly fall sick; for that matter all Indian dogs have great immunity. They are fit for every climate and for me they are the most beautiful dogs and unique in their own way.

Q. Your advice to people wanting to adopt?
I would say if you are a dog lover, adopt a desi, they need you more than a pedigree dog. If you want a pet and a friend, what’s better than our own desis? They are a great company, easy to train and low maintenance with high immunity!
